Concierge Medicine Questions
Membership
-
Instead of billing insurance visit by visit, you pay the practice directly for a membership. That lets us keep patient panels small, so you get real time with your provider. Traditional insurance-based primary care averages about seven minutes of face time per visit. We offer two primary care memberships, Concierge Medicine and Direct Primary Care, so you can choose the level of access that fits you.
-
Concierge Care is our highest level of access: 24/7 contact with your provider, direct email and cell phone access, and all office visits included in your annual fee. Direct Primary Care is for people in relatively good health who don't need to see a provider often but still want personal, timely care at a lower cost. DPC members pay a monthly membership plus a set fee per visit.
-
You pay a fee directly to Concierge Medicine of Cincinnati to be a member. For Concierge Care members, all office visits are included in the annual fee. DPC members pay a set price for each office visit. For most DPC patients, the yearly total is about the same as or less than what they'd pay out of pocket under a typical insurance plan.
-
Because we aren't tied to the fee-for-service model, which depends on seeing a high volume of patients every day, we accept fewer patients. That gives our providers more time with each person and a closer working relationship. When you need an urgent appointment, you can be seen the same day by your provider or another provider in the practice. Patients in DPC and concierge practices typically have better health outcomes and higher satisfaction, and we can act as your advocate while helping keep your overall healthcare costs down.
-
In some ways, without the higher cost. We give concierge-level attention to all of our patients, and neither you nor the practice is tied up in insurance billing. Many boutique practices charge from $3,000 to over $10,000 a year and still bill insurance at higher contracted rates, so their patients still face visit limits, denials, and high deductibles.
-
No. We have a strong focus on women's health, but we care for patients at every stage of life, from adolescence through post-menopause, and we see men as well.
-
You can cancel any time after your initial six-month term by giving the office 30 days' written notice. Fees for that month are prorated to your cancellation date.
-
Yes, if we have room. We limit the number of patients we accept, so rejoining depends on availability.
Costs, Insurance & Medicare
-
No. Concierge Care and Direct Primary Care are alternatives to insurance, so we don't file claims for you. If your plan has out-of-network benefits, you may be able to submit some visits yourself. If you have a Health Savings Account (HSA), you may be able to submit invoices for reimbursement.
-
All of our providers are non-participating Medicare providers. We can still refer you to specialists, hospitals, and imaging facilities, and Medicare or your managed care plan typically covers those visits, hospital stays, and imaging.
-
Yes. We strongly recommend carrying health insurance for services outside the practice. The most cost-effective plan to pair with Direct Primary Care is a high-deductible plan with an HSA.
-
A 30-minute visit is $55 and a 60-minute visit is $105. That's in addition to your monthly membership, which is $45, $55, $75, or $95 depending on your age.
-
No. Visit fees are standardized, and you'll know the price of a service before you have it. Because we aren't part of a hospital system or bound by insurance contract rates, our services cost significantly less.
-
Not at this time. There is an ongoing push at the national and state level to make Direct Primary Care fees deductible.
-
No. Direct Primary Care is a direct financial relationship with the practice, so membership fees aren't eligible for insurance reimbursement. You can use HSA or FSA funds for visit-related fees, like an office visit or blood work.
-
Not on its own. At the federal level, a Direct Primary Care membership paired with a high-deductible health plan meets the ACA requirement. Some states are passing laws that let DPC membership count toward the requirement, but Ohio hasn't yet.
Labs, Vaccines & Specialists
-
You have three options. We can send you to an outside lab that bills your insurance. We can draw labs in the office and send them to a lab that bills your insurance. Or, when appropriate, we can draw labs in the office and bill you directly at a discounted price.
-
We work with VaxCare to offer routine vaccines your insurance may cover. Our staff checks your benefits before giving any vaccine, so you'll know your out-of-pocket cost. Cash pricing is available if you don't have insurance coverage.
-
We'll coordinate your visit with a specialist in your insurance network, and they'll bill your insurance.
Access, Visits & Records
-
Concierge Care members get direct email and cell phone access to their provider. DPC members can reach the practice during office hours, and after hours through our on-call provider.
-
Sometimes, when it's appropriate. We see virtual visits as a supplement to in-person care, not a replacement. Contact the office for approval before booking one. If you need a physical exam, we may ask you to come in instead.
-
Yes. If you've been a patient elsewhere in Greater Cincinnati, we can usually access those records through EPIC. Your records with us are available anytime in the Athena patient portal
